Obituary for Joan Racheal Dugas (Wagner)

A Tribute to Gorgeous Creature We bid farewell tonight to a remarkable woman, Joan Dugas, (née Wagner), also known to the kids as Gorgeous Creature, and my mother-in-law, who passed away this evening from a long battle with lung cancer. Joan was an extraordinary, unique individual with a heart of gold and a will of steel. She worked hard to raise her four children and took pride in always doing her very best at whatever she did. Joan felt deeply for the well-being of nature's creatures, in particular her dogs. She cooked daily healthy fresh food for them, found them holistic remedies for their ailments, paid for their operations, scolded them when they barked and they would all cuddle up with her at night. Being an animal at Joan's was being in heaven. She also fed and took care of the birds, with a soft spot for hummingbirds. The homestead is in the country in Northern Ontario on a river. She would go out on the river in her paddle boat to fish several times a day but never kept the fish unless she was having company for dinner. In her golden years she became a vegetarian and discovered energy healing and practiced Reiki. Joan did not know nor cared to know, much about the outside world but I never met someone more spiritually connected to the world. Joan would sit for hours knitting while watching action movies. For awhile, she worked closely with a charitable organization that provided colourful knitted afghans, teddy bears and kits for orphanages. Whenever we went to visit, there was always the heartwarming pot of grandma Joan's soup on the stove ready to dig in after the long drive. She was always so gracious and caring. She trained the kids to call her gorgeous creature which they did with a big smile on their faces. She in particular had fun with this. These are just a few of my memories which are insufficient to really describe such a special woman. She will be forever remembered by those lives she touched and sorely missed by family and friends.
